For over 40 year Die Kleine Kinderschule has been offering high quality German language learning through play in the Edmonton area.

Die Kleine Kinderschule (DKK) is a registered non-profit organization that is committed to promoting German language education and culture in Edmonton and the surrounding areas. Our goal is to provide a preschool setting where children ages 3 to 5 are encouraged to learn German in a warm and stimulating play environment. DKK’s incredible teachers and teaching assistants are required to be licensed Early Childhood Educators who have received first aid training to ensure high quality instruction for your child. Learning is fun in playschool! Through child’s play we hope to provide a satisfying and stimulating experience for each child, that fosters independence and encourages activities that lead to a sense of accomplishment.

It is our philosophy that a child learns a language by exposure to it. We welcome children from all backgrounds, no knowledge of German is required nor are the parents expected to speak it. Our school provides a German-language setting on a regular basis for children at all levels of linguistic proficiency. In the classroom our playschool teachers speak German, supplemented with actions, pictures, songs, and other educational aids, and the children learn to use the language not through formal instruction but through the medium of play. You will be surprised how quickly your child will start to understand and use simple words and expressions! DKK not only supports German language learning within our classrooms, but across our city as well by holding membership with the following organizations:

  • We are a member of the Association for English-German Bilingual Education of Edmonton (AEGBEE), supporting its goal of providing German education for children from age 5 through Grade 12.

  • DKK is also a member of the German Canadian Association of Alberta (GCAA), recognizing the importance of supporting and connecting with other German language and cultural organizations in our community.
  • The safety and well-being of each child within our program is our highest priority, therefore DKK is licensed by Alberta Child Care Services and undergoes annual recertification at all of our locations. We also comply with the Child Care Licensing Act and its regulations, applicable public health measures, and Alberta Health Services (AHS) guidelines for preschools. In addition, DKK follows the requirements and expectations established by our leased classroom locations (Edmonton Public School Board schools and the German Canadian Cultural Association of Edmonton). Our program is not affiliated with Edmonton Public Schools, but we do follow the EPSB School Division Calendar for majority of our school holidays and breaks.

We would love to answer any questions you may have! Our DKK Executive Board consists of parent volunteers who are elected at the Annual General Meeting in May. We come from a variety of backgrounds (e.g. DKK alumni, German immigrants) but each of us have experienced the joy of watching our child grow through participating in Die Kleine Kinderschule.
